Our First Podcast is Out!
We are excited to share our first Leadership Center podcast with you! This ‘Called to Thrive’ series features Trisha coaching our guest, Sara Lattimore, to clarify her vocation.
Sara is a pastor, mother, and doctoral student who has a big vision for her life but is stifled by the many obstacles that seem to be blocking her in her present reality.
Sara and Trisha connected in the fall of 2021 and have had several conversations about calling. Sara’s felt stuck for a while now, so she is our co-conversationalist for our mini-series to get her own personalized coaching while giving you an insight into the vocational coaching process.
In this episode we cover:
-
What vocation means and why it matters
-
How owning our calling makes all the difference for our future
-
How Sara’s vocational clarity has waned over time
Defining Vocation
Vocation is the fulfillment of our life’s purpose regardless of our income.
Vocation is our Why. When we are able to be self-aware, it is the gut-level compulsion that drives us toward doing. It’s the fulfillment that we have in our most authentic moments. It’s the place where we have the greatest impact.
And, it’s the place “where our deep gladness meets the world’s deep need,” as Fredrick Beauchner puts it.
This deep joy comes from a place of listening and reflection and moves us to act.
To begin any journey of meaning, we first begin with who we are, then we are able to determine what we will do. Vocation, our why, drives the what and how. It is the foundation that provides strength for the vision, the strategic plan, and the activation.
The word vocation can be really confusing these days. Most people think of vocation as a formal term for our career, an answer to the “what do you do?” question. While our job can fit within our vocation, our vocation is much more than a job.
Vocation and Calling
Our vocation could also be considered a calling. The word vocation comes from the latin word for voice and literally means to listen. The idea here is to listen for our calling. But who or what are we listening to? Coming from the Christian tradition, I believe there are two primary voices embedded in our story that call us. We will talk through these in detail in module two.
Questions for Reflection
I invite Sara the following questions in our podcast. Consider what your response might be.
-
Why is vocation important to you?
-
What do you consider your calling or vocation?
-
What outcomes are you hoping to have from our coaching conversations?
