Honoring Black Women

Women of color are the most marginalized and missed in being honored for their influence in our world. In researching the inequity in the church, I found that both women and people of color are least represented in leadership, particularly in the Wesleyan Tradition, which was born out of the abolitionist movement and viewed women as equal to men. This is most evident at the intersection of race and gender, as women of color are the fewest leaders in the churches I studied, at less than 1%.

The church is not alone in not valuing women and people of color enough to welcome them into the foremost leadership roles on a consistent basis, as this is mirrored in our society at large. I could give facts for days substantiating this claim but instead (you can read my dissertation for more).

In an effort to exonerate the many women who have transformed the world through their calling, I am dedicating all of my posts on social media during the month of February 2020 to honoring black women who are making history through their story. Thank you for being you in the world for all of our benefit.
