Give Yourself a Vacation!
We went on vacation this summer!
Vacation or sabbath (or sabbatical if it’s an extended time away), is a time for each person in our family to experience restorative activity in our life together.
I have heard people say recently, “who has time for vacation?” My first response is often to justify why we are taking time off- “our kids are out of school and I am not willing to stay home.” The reality is we planned time away so our family will thrive.
We have learned that when we drive places together and soak up nature and quality time we appreciate one another deeply. And we remember the meaning we create in our day-to-day activities back home. So we planned a few trips spread throughout the summer to get away, play, and reflect.
As DJ Didonna, co-founder of the Sabbatical Project writes for Quartz at Work, sabbaticals give us “an opportunity to be creative, to decrease many of the normal distractions of day-to-day life, and to focus on what’s important.”(1)
Yes, exactly! Taking a vacation is verifiably good for us!
Even still, the Sabbatical project acknowledged most people don’t take time for themselves until they are burnt out and many only receive extended rest from the privilege of their position. (2)
Taking even a small break from work helps us to thrive.
So, if you are wondering if a vacation is justified, consider it your restoration session for all of the meaningful work you do each day.
Then put it in the calendar and go!
